Hidden Perks of House Sitting
Updated: July 12, 2026When people ask "Is house sitting worth it?" they focus on free accommodation. But there are dozens of unexpected benefits that compound the value far beyond just a place to stay while you care for someone's beloved pets.
Perks I've Noticed Come Up Often
Thoughtful Touches Around the House
Most homeowners are surprisingly generous when it comes to preparing their homes for sitters. Here are a few things I've come across along the way:
In the kitchen, you might find:
- Pantries with spices, oils, and cooking basics
- Coffee, tea, and snacks
- Sometimes a fridge or freezer with a few things in it
In the bathroom, you might find:
- Shampoo, soap, and body wash
- Toilet paper and paper towels
- Laundry detergent
Why this matters: You're not buying trial sizes at every new location or wasting money on full bottles you can't take with you when you leave.
Always be respectful of what's available for use. What you can use is typically mentioned in the welcome guide. Never take food or supplies if the owner hasn't specifically given permission.
Entertainment & Subscriptions
While you're caring for pets and maintaining the home, you also get access to entertainment:
- Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, or other streaming services
- Cable or satellite packages
- Music streaming accounts
Some homes also have home gym equipment, pools, hot tubs, or game rooms, and sitters are often welcome to use them during the stay.
The Intangibles
Some benefits can't be measured in dollars but add real value:
- Local Insights: Homeowners often share their favorite restaurants, hiking trails, dog parks, or hidden gems you'd never find as a tourist
- Neighborhood Connections: Friendly neighbors who look out for you and the pets, or invite you to local events
- Genuine Friendships: I've stayed in touch with several homeowners and their pets, and returned for repeat sits
- Peace of Mind: Living in a real home with pets instead of hotels or hostels. Your own space, your own routine, and animal companionship
The Rare But Real: Gifts & Appreciation
Some homeowners leave small tokens of appreciation for sitters. I've received things like:
- Gift cards
- Bottles of wine or champagne
- Chocolates or local treats
- Thank you cards with kind messages
- A handwritten "welcome home" note waiting on the counter
- Occasionally, cash tips
Important: These gestures are NOT common and should never be expected. House sitting is an exchange of care for accommodation. The real reward is the trust homeowners place in you to care for their beloved pets. But when these gestures do happen, they're always a pleasant surprise.
Extra Perks for Frequent Sitters
The more sits I do, the more of these location-specific bonuses I run into. They're not guaranteed, but they've come up often enough that I've come to appreciate them.
- EV Charging: Free electric car charging (huge savings for me as an EV driver)
- Use of a Car: Some sits allow sitters to use the homeowner's vehicle, especially helpful for vet visits or pet emergencies
- Cleaning Services: Biweekly or weekly cleaning included (a personal favorite!)
- Parking Passes: Valuable in cities where parking costs add up quickly
- HOA Amenities: Access to pools, gyms, tennis courts in gated communities
- National Park Passes: Some owners share their annual passes with sitters
- Beach Access: Private beach access or resort privileges
- Equipment Use: Bicycles, kayaks, paddleboards, or sporting gear
- Free Passes: Zoo, Aquarium, or Museum passes for sitters to enjoy during their stay
- Some Gear: Beach chairs, bicycles, and other extras left out for guests to use
- Gym or Fitness Studio Access: Tied to the home or its building
- Home Office Setup: A real desk, monitor, and reliable internet if you work remotely
- Book, Game, or Puzzle Collections: Left out for guests
- Referrals to Future Sits: Homeowners often recommend you to friends or neighbors who also need a sitter
- Holiday or Event Invitations: Being included in a neighborhood gathering or homeowner's family event if your dates overlap
Fresh Produce & Gardens
A few sits I've had included their own gardens, which came with wonderful unexpected benefits:
- Fresh lemons, oranges, or pomegranates from fruit trees
- Vegetables like tomatoes or herbs from garden beds
- Fresh eggs if you're caring for chickens (yes, this happens!)
There's something special about picking fresh produce from the yard and using it in your meals while you're caring for the homeowner's pets and property.
If You're Sitting Full-Time (No Rent, No Bills)
This is where the math really changes. If you travel occasionally and keep your own home, this section doesn't apply to you. But for those of us who live this lifestyle full-time, the biggest hidden perk is one line item: zero utilities.
- No electricity bills
- No water or gas costs
- No internet expenses
These costs can easily add $100 to $200 per month when renting. With full-time house sitting, it's all included in your exchange of caring for their pets and home. The wifi is already connected, the heat and AC work, and you focus on the animals rather than worrying about bills.
Set the Right Expectations
Here's what I've learned:
- Never expect perks beyond what's agreed. The listing should clearly state what's included. Everything else is a bonus.
- Every home is different. Some are minimalist with just the basics; others are fully loaded with extras.
- Surprises happen. In my experience, most sits come with at least one small unexpected perk or pleasant discovery.
